Developing Mental Toughness in Young Athletes

January 18, 2023

Troy Horne’s son Moses has a goal of becoming a professional basketball player. Troy and Moses both recognized that the journey would be physically and mentally challenging. So what does Troy do? He researches about the mental skills used by world class athletes that help them to outperform the competition. And then, he, along with Moses, wrote a book, Mental Toughness for Young Athletes: Eight Proven 5-Minute Mindset Exercises for Kids And Teens Who Play Competitive Sports.

This book is, pound for pound, one of the best books I’ve read on the subject and it leads several categories on Amazon. Troy and Moses do a great job of introducing a key principle or mental skill, describing a real life example of that skill, and then provide an easy to do exercise to develop that specific skill. It was written to be read by young athletes, but there is an edition of the book for parents and coaches. In our conversation, Troy explains why he decided to write a book, talks about some of the challenges of being a parent, and also discusses some of the key mental skills needed by young (arguably all) athletes.
